Health Condition Labels
Most things that we attach a label to are not really diagnoses and have multiple etiological factors. This certainly applies to autism, ADD, ADHD, depression….the list goes on and on. I think in alternative circles we understand this….it is the traditional medical practitioners who don’t get it and would have to embrace a whole new paradigm in order to get it (which I don’t see happening for a few hundred years if ever!).

But, I must say that the labels/diagnoses are not all bad (if you can keep in mind what they REALLY are):

1)      They give us a way to communicate about subsets of the population who are experiencing similar difficulties. If I had to say something like “Research on children who have developmental delays, abnormal communication and social skills, difficulties with sensory processing, self-stimulatory behaviors who may or may not have retardation, anxiety, poor motor skills and etc” in every sentence to replace the word “autism” it would be ridiculous!

2)      The diagnoses enable a child or person to receive services and potentially get insurance reimbursement for those services. Kids can’t get special help in school if they don’t have a diagnosis. As wrong as this may be, our society operates on these diagnoses so to have one opens the door to help (unfortunately the help is often drugs – which is not really helpful – but sometimes the help is good).

3)      I think humans have a need to put order into things….to categorize them and make them fit in somewhere. For most parents who have a child who is having difficulties and isn’t like other kids, it is a huge relief to be given a diagnosis. Their child is not just some aberration – he fits into a category with other children who have the same or similar types of problems. The diagnosis give them a stable reference point from which to then operate. They can talk to other parents and professionals about how to help him, they can research causes and treatment, etc because we have all agreed to call these particular cluster of problems a certain thing in which we can all agree (theoretically at least). And, it validates them to some extent. If you have a child that is out of control or has certain behaviors, you are looked upon as a bad parent who can’t control their kid. But if he is autistic, it is more understandable, you aren’t a bad parent and others will feel bad for you rather than ridicule you. It’s like, if you can’t name it/label it/diagnosis it, then it really doesn’t exist and people can’t even start to understand it. I think it is the same as with some of the vague adult illnesses – chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, MCS – if you don’t label it, then you are just a hypochondriac…even a whim p (after all, we all have pain and fatigue – get over it and get to work). If you have a diagnosis, you are somehow validated as actually having a problem and are not just neurotic.

I don’t think it is particularly right. But it is how we operate in today’s world. I think most of the people on this list understand that these labels don’t imply etiology or even full heterogeneity…hopefully!
